SpaceX Seeks to Launch One Million Solar-Powered Satellite Data Centers
SpaceX, owned by Elon Musk, is seeking US federal approval to launch a massive constellation of up to one million solar-powered satellites. The company aims to use these satellites as space-based data centers dedicated to running artificial intelligence applications.
According to an application submitted to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), SpaceX believes these satellites represent the most efficient way to meet the rapidly growing demand for AI computing power, a vision that transcends the purely technical aspects and touches upon ambitious future goals.
The company went further, describing the project as the first step towards humanity becoming a Level 2 civilization on the Kardashev scale—a civilization capable of harnessing the full power of the sun—while also supporting Musk's stated goal of securing a multi-planetary future for humanity.
But The Verge suggested that the announced figure of one million satellites might not receive immediate approval, considering it a potential starting point for regulatory negotiations with relevant authorities.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently approved the launch of an additional 7,500 satellites for the Starlink project, but decided to postpone approval for approximately 14,988 others.
According to the European Space Agency (ESA), there are currently around 15,000 man-made satellites in Earth's orbit, numbers that are already raising increasing concerns about space pollution and orbital debris.
This development comes at a time when other companies are facing similar challenges, as Amazon is seeking an extension of the FCC's deadline for launching more than 1,600 satellites, citing a shortage of available launch vehicles.
In the same context, reports indicate that SpaceX is considering merging with two other companies owned by Elon Musk, namely Tesla and xAI (which previously merged with the X platform), as part of possible preparations for the company's IPO in the coming period.
