The explosion of Elon Musk's SpaceX Starship spacecraft on Thursday disrupted about 240 flights, the US Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday, as concerns about falling debris from space forced more than two dozen of those planes to divert.

It was the second straight explosion during a test launch by SpaceX. The US Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday ordered flights out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Palm Beach airports in Florida to be grounded for about an hour.

The incident delayed 171 flights, diverted 28 flights and grounded 40 flights for 22 minutes after they flew through the debris response activity area, the agency said. The average delay for the 171 aircraft was 28 minutes.

The agency said Thursday it had asked SpaceX to investigate the loss of a Starship spacecraft. Last month, the agency approved SpaceX's launch license for the test flight on Monday, while its investigation into the company's previous Starship failure remains open.
