"Day of Resolve".. How Did the UAE Prove Its Excellence in Crisis Management?
The United Arab Emirates commemorates the fourth anniversary of January 17, known as "Day of Resolve," a national occasion that reinforces the unity between the leadership and the people and reflects the country's ability to manage crises firmly and calmly, without compromising societal security or the stability of daily life.
In this context, Brigadier General Pilot Abdul Nasser Al-Humaidi, the official spokesperson for the UAE Ministry of Defense, explained to Sky News Arabia that the country has adopted a well-considered approach in dealing with threats, saying: "The UAE has adopted the principle of smart deterrence, which means using force when necessary."
He emphasized that this approach does not involve employing force in every crisis, adding: "The country does not necessarily use force in every threat and crisis."
This concept of deterrence had a direct impact on the speed and effectiveness of the response. Al-Humaidi points out that it "played a role in the armed forces' effective response to threats," in addition to sending "a clear message to the aggressors... a deterrent message that attacking the state is futile."
Alongside the military and security response, the state was keen to ensure the continuity of public life. The Ministry of Defense spokesperson affirms that the UAE "strove to keep national platforms operational and the pace of life running smoothly," which "contributed to strengthening the national security system as a whole."
He adds that "all state institutions performed admirably in responding to this threat that the country faced four years ago."
This performance comes within a long historical context in which the UAE has given special attention to developing its armed forces, known as the "Shield of the Nation," which have proven their high readiness and ability to neutralize threats. Their response to the Houthi attack on January 17, 2022, on civilian sites within the country is a clear example of this.
The UAE maintains defense partnerships with some of the world's most powerful militaries, and its forces are equipped with the latest air, land, and naval weaponry. This, coupled with significant advancements in its military industries, is reflected in the prestigious status of the IDEX International Exhibition for Advanced Defense Industries and the establishment of over 65 companies and projects in the defense sector. These encompass missile and air defense systems, AI-enhanced systems, space technology, and cybersecurity.
The UAE Armed Forces' role extends beyond national defense to supporting regional and international security and stability through numerous humanitarian and military engagements. These include relief operations in Pakistan in 2005, demining efforts in southern Lebanon in 2008, participation in the international coalition against ISIS, and involvement in the Arab Coalition to support the legitimate government in Yemen.
"Day of Resolve" stands as a national milestone, underscoring that the UAE's strength lies not only in its military capabilities but also in its comprehensive crisis management model. This model combines smart deterrence with the continuity of life and the integration of state institutions, making this day a testament to the nation's readiness and its ability to confidently and resolutely confront challenges.
