Egypt Reveals Shocking Marriage and Divorce Rates!
The number of divorces in Egypt increased by 3.1% last year, while the number of marriage contracts decreased by 2.5%, according to data from the Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
CAPMAS stated that its annual bulletin on marriage and divorce statistics for 2024 showed the registration of 936,730 marriage contracts in 2024, compared to 961,200 in 2023, representing a decrease of 2.5%.
The agency explained that the number of divorces last year reached 273,800, compared to 265,600 in 2023, an increase of 3.1%.
The number of marriage contracts in urban areas reached 395,200 in 2024, representing 42.2% of the total contracts, compared to 388,600 in 2023, an increase of 1.7%. The number of marriage contracts in rural areas reached 541,500 in 2024, representing 57.8% of the total contracts, compared to 572,500 contracts in 2023, a decrease of 5.4%.
Age of Marriage
According to the data, the highest marriage rate for husbands was recorded in the 25-30 age group, with 384,100 contracts representing 41% of the total. The average age of husbands in this age group was 30.6 years in 2024.
For wives, the highest marriage rate was recorded in the 20-25 age group, with 349,100 contracts representing 37.3% of the total. The average age of wives in this age group was 25.2 years in 2024.
The highest marriage rate for husbands was recorded among those with a secondary school certificate, with 369,600 contracts representing 39.5% of the total. The highest marriage rate for women with a secondary school certificate was recorded among those with a secondary school certificate, with 318,500 contracts representing 34% of the total.
Urban Divorce
According to the data, the total number of divorces in urban areas reached 158,200 in 2024, representing 57.8% of all divorces, compared to 150,400 in 2023, an increase of 5.1%. Meanwhile, the number of divorces in rural areas reached 115,600 in 2024, representing 42.2% of all divorces, compared to 115,100 in 2023, an increase of 0.5%.
The highest divorce rate for men was recorded in the 35-40 age group, with 47,300 divorces, representing 18.2% of the total. The lowest divorce rate was recorded in the 18-20 age group, with 356 divorces, representing 0.1%. The average age of divorced men in 2024 was 40.8 years.
For women, the highest divorce rate was recorded in the 25-30 age group, with 45,600 divorces, representing 17.6%. The lowest divorce rate was recorded in the 75 and over age group, with 168 divorces, representing 0.1%. The average age of divorced women in 2024 was 34.6 years.
The highest divorce rate among divorced men was recorded among those with a secondary school diploma, with 91,300 divorces. 35.2%. Among divorced women, the highest divorce rate was recorded among those with a secondary school certificate, with 85,800 divorce certificates representing 33.1%.
