UAE Allocates $15 Million to Support Sudan
The United Arab Emirates announced on Wednesday a $15 million contribution to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to support humanitarian response efforts in Sudan and neighboring countries. This announcement was made during the UNHCR's pledging conference to launch the 2026 Global Humanitarian Appeal. This support reflects the UAE's ongoing commitment to assisting communities affected by conflict and instability.
His Excellency Jamal Al Musharrakh, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, affirmed the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) worldwide.
He noted that the world is witnessing unprecedented levels of displacement due to conflict, persecution, and the challenges associated with climate change, emphasizing the importance of strengthening collective action based on solidarity and shared responsibility.
His Excellency highlighted the severe and ongoing humanitarian crises in South Sudan, Sudan, the Sahel region, Myanmar, and Ukraine, which continue to force large numbers of families to flee their homes and across borders.
He also noted the continued worsening of internal displacement in regions such as the Great Lakes and the Horn of Africa, where climate pressures and violence are exacerbating humanitarian needs. He emphasized the vulnerability of women, children, and other at-risk groups who face increasing protection challenges requiring targeted intervention.
His Excellency affirmed the UAE’s commitment to providing principled humanitarian assistance through the Emirates International Aid Agency, in close coordination with UNHCR and its partners, to support host communities and ensure that displaced persons and refugees have access to essential services. He stated, “Refugees and displaced persons are individuals with dignity and the right to live in safety and hope.”
He further stressed that predictive funding and equitable burden-sharing are essential to ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in need in a safe, sustainable, and unimpeded manner. With its pledge of US$15 million, the UAE aims to strengthen protection and assistance programs for those affected by the crisis in Sudan and neighboring countries, contributing to long-term stability and resilience.
This aid comes as part of the UAE’s unwavering commitment to supporting efforts to address this catastrophic crisis and to working collectively with regional and international partners, particularly its partners in Africa, to ensure stability and sustainable development for the brotherly Sudanese people. This underscores the deeply rooted values of humanitarian solidarity held by the UAE, both its leadership and its people.
The UAE continues its humanitarian efforts in support of its Sudanese brothers and sisters. Relief and humanitarian aid has reached US$784 million since the outbreak of the conflict in 2013. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UAE is the second largest donor of aid to Sudan after the United States since the start of the conflict. The total value of aid provided by the UAE to the Sudanese people between 2015 and 2015 exceeded US$4.24 billion.
The UNHCR Pledging Conference is an annual event held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, where representatives of countries gather to announce their voluntary contributions to support the UNHCR’s humanitarian response worldwide for the coming year.
