Life sentence for those launching Ramadan rockets

A family burned in Egypt.. The penalty for launching Ramadan rockets reach life imprisonment.

In a swift response from Egyptian authorities to the widespread use of fireworks, which has caused the deaths of several people and the burning of residential apartments, the Public Prosecutor decided to prosecute all dealers, importers, and users of these fireworks. In a statement issued yesterday, Thursday, the Public Prosecutor affirmed that the possession or use of all forms of explosive materials constitutes criminal offenses, for which the legislature has set severe penalties.

This comes after authorities launched intensive campaigns to combat this phenomenon, arresting individuals a few days ago in possession of 16,000 fireworks of various shapes and sizes. They also raided sites selling these fireworks, seizing 158,000 fireworks from a bookstore owner, in addition to 25,000 fireworks in the Basateen area of Cairo and 28,000 fireworks in the Faisal area of Suez.

But what is the penalty?

To answer this question, Major General Raafat El-Sharkawy, former Assistant Minister of Interior, explained that fireworks are punishable by law, warning of their serious harm, such as amputation of hands or fingers or the setting of fires. He added that Article 152A of the Egyptian Penal Code No. 58 of 1937 and its amendments regulates how to deal with this phenomenon.

He also emphasized that the article stipulates a penalty of life imprisonment or hard labor for anyone who possesses, possesses, manufactures, or imports fireworks without obtaining the necessary license. He added that any material used in their composition is considered fireworks. He also indicated that the Ministry of Interior has developed a plan to tighten controls on all smuggling sites, including airports, ports, crossings, desert roads, and criminal hotspots known for manufacturing and trading such materials.

Fireworks have caused several incidents in Egypt recently. A few days ago, a young girl was killed, and her family members suffered severe burns, after a fire broke out in their apartment in the eastern city of Ismailia, caused by a "Ramadan rocket" made of fireworks launched by a child inside the house. The incident occurred moments before iftar and completely destroyed the apartment after the rocket ignited a gas cylinder in the family's home.

A car was also set on fire in Qalyubia by fireworks. It was discovered that a poultry shop owner was playing with fireworks on his balcony when one of them fell on a car below, completely burning it. In Cairo, fireworks also caused a child's eye to burst after a university student played with fireworks.
