Saudi Arabia airlifts urgent humanitarian aid to Sudan

First Batch of Saudi Aid Airlift Arrives in Sudan

Two relief airplanes, carrying more than 100 tons of food and shelter aid, representing the first batch of the Saudi aid airlift to support those affected by the torrential rains and floods in Sudan, have arrived.

The aid is being dispatched by King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) in implementation of the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Saudi Ambassador to Sudan Ali bin Hassan Jaafar said that the humanitarian aid comes to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the torrential rains and floods across Sudan. He noted that this reflects the brotherly relations that bring together the two peoples.

This comes within the framework of the ongoing Saudi support for humanitarian and relief work and to help the needy in all countries.

The United Nations said more than 146,200 people had been affected by floods. Footage aired by local media shows rising waters submerging villages. Authorities have declared a state of emergency in six of the country’s 18 provinces.

The western Darfur region and the provinces of Nile River, White Nile, West Kordofan and South Kordofan are among the hardest hit, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, or OCHA.
