A prominent US Republican senator confirmed that the United States is studying the possibility of transferring its forces from the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey to a Greek island, due to the "worrying" policies pursued by Ankara.
"We don't know what will happen to Incirlik. We hope for the best, but we have to devise a plan for the worst-case scenario," Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson, head of the Europe branch of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Washington Examiner Friday.
He explained that Washington seeks to maintain its cooperation with Turkey and its military presence in its territory, adding: "I do not think that we want this strategic change, but from a defensive position we have to look at the reality of the situation, which is that the path that (Turkish President Recep Tayyip) Erdogan follows. not good".
The senator acknowledged that the United States views Greece as an alternative to transferring the forces present in Incirlik to it, saying that the "unfortunate" approach that Erdogan is taking is pushing Washington to strengthen its military cooperation with Greece, especially with regard to the American military presence at the naval base in Souda Bay on the island of Crete.
