The UAE and South Korea Explore Prospects for Medical Cooperation in Radiation Oncology

The "Korea Medical in the UAE 2025" symposium was held on Saturday, jointly organized by the South Korean Embassy and the Korea Healthcare Development Institute (KHIDI).

The symposium, titled "New Horizons in Radiation Therapy: Particle Beam Therapy," was attended by a wide range of international specialists and experts in the field of radiation oncology. It was held at Le Royal Meridien Hotel in Abu Dhabi.

This symposium was organized within the framework of advancing scientific and clinical cooperation between the UAE and the Republic of South Korea, and consolidating specialized academic exchange in the latest radiation oncology technologies, particularly proton therapy and carbon ion therapy. This comes in light of the growing global need to develop advanced medical solutions to address the challenges of cancer.

At the opening ceremony, Park Jung-kyung, Minister Plenipotentiary and Consul General at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the UAE, delivered the opening remarks. He reviewed statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), which indicate that more than 20 million cancer cases are diagnosed annually worldwide, with 10 million deaths from the disease. He also noted that the number of cases is expected to rise to more than 35 million annually over the next 25 years, underscoring the urgent need to enhance international cooperation and efforts in the areas of prevention and treatment.

Park emphasized that cancer is one of the leading causes of death in both South Korea and the UAE, calling for the unification of scientific and medical capabilities between the two countries to address this common health challenge.

Park explained that South Korea is applying the latest scientific advances in advanced radiotherapy technologies, including proton therapy and carbon ion therapy, while the UAE is confidently moving towards developing its healthcare infrastructure by introducing heavy ion accelerators into its medical system, seeking to ensure a sustainable, cancer-free health environment for its citizens.

In his speech, he reviewed the depth of the strategic partnership between South Korea and the UAE, which began with the launch of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in 2009 and has witnessed significant expansion to include the nuclear energy, conventional energy, defense, and investment sectors. He expressed his aspiration to extend this solid cooperation to include the healthcare sector, a high priority for the leadership of both countries.

The symposium activities began with three specialized main sessions. The first was titled "Introduction to Radiotherapy," while the second was devoted to discussing "Proton Therapy." The third session concluded with a review of "Carbon Ion Therapy" techniques. Each session included interactive scientific discussion panels with the participation of international speakers and specialized experts.
