Following rumors circulating on social media in Egypt about the disappearance of a Chinese tourist, the Egyptian Ministry of Interior completely denied the matter. The statement explained that "the Chinese citizen was arrested along with others as part of an electronic fraud network."
The ministry also confirmed that the aforementioned tourist was arrested as part of a criminal network specializing in electronic fraud, in accordance with specific legal procedures implemented by the relevant authorities.
The ministry explained that a security check revealed that the woman was part of a gang comprising eight others, including three of the same nationality. The gang specialized in luring its victims, most of whom were citizens of the same country, through fake advertisements claiming to provide job opportunities in the country in the field of e-commerce, and then kidnapping them upon their arrival. It also revealed that "the accused forced their victims to contact their families and demand sums of money in exchange for their release," which were transferred via digital platforms.
The ministry also indicated that after monitoring their activity, they were arrested in an apartment located within the jurisdiction of the First Settlement Police Station. They were found in possession of several firearms and knives, electric shock devices, and mobile phones containing evidence confirming their involvement. The ministry concluded by confirming that all legal measures had been taken regarding the incident, adding that the relevant investigative authorities have begun their work.
