Britain announces the temporary closure of its embassy building in Egypt

British Foreign Office reports temporary closure of its embassy building in Egypt

A spokesperson for the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirmed that the British Embassy in Cairo continues to operate, despite the temporary closure of the main building. The spokesperson explained, "While we review the impact of the work carried out by the Egyptian authorities in the surrounding area, British nationals can continue to receive consular assistance."

The British Embassy announced the closure of the main embassy building after the Egyptian authorities removed the security barriers in front of the embassy. Since 2014, iron and concrete barriers have been placed at the entrance to the street leading to the British Embassy, closing it to vehicle traffic. Except for visitors to the embassy to complete their paperwork, they must undergo security screening.

Egyptian Authorities' Action

The Egyptian authorities' action to remove the security barriers surrounding the British Embassy in Cairo's historic Garden City district has received widespread attention in recent hours. Days ago, political parties and public figures in Egypt called for the removal of barriers in front of the British Embassy, in response to the arrest of an Egyptian citizen who volunteered to protect the Egyptian Embassy in London from abroad after attempts to attack it. He was later released after the intervention of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

The National Front Party called for "a review of the treatment of British diplomatic missions in Cairo, most notably the British Embassy in Garden City, which, due to concrete barriers and excessive security measures, has been transformed into a closed zone that impedes the lives of citizens and imposes a distorted reality in the center of the capital." Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty previously threatened to implement the principle of reciprocity if any country failed to provide the necessary protection for the Egyptian embassy there.
