UAE: More than 12,000 Wi-Fi Hacks
Public Wi-Fi networks are a trap for stealing your password without your knowledge. Using them, especially in markets or cafes, can lead to dire consequences, exposing you to hacking attacks without a realistic understanding of the underlying cause.
The UAE Cyber Security Council recently issued a series of warnings after the country recorded more than 12,000 hacks via Wi-Fi networks since the beginning of this year. The Council indicated that this number represents about 35% of the total cyberattacks in the country, as the primary source is Wi-Fi networks. It also emphasized that hackers and intruders target users through these networks, which have become effective traps for stealing passwords, banking details, and personal information, according to the Emirates News Agency.
Meanwhile, the Council found these warnings a window to warn of the risks of unsafe use of open, free, and unreliable Wi-Fi networks. The Council states that these networks pose a direct risk of leaking users' personal and financial information. At the same time, the Council recommended that all users adopt advanced security measures, most notably the use of reliable VPN applications.
It explained that users of open internet networks may be exposed to numerous risks, including what are known as "man-in-the-middle" attacks, in which hackers and cybercriminals can read transmitted data, record calls, redirect users to fake websites, and even intercept phone calls. They can also install malware or spyware on users' devices without their knowledge.
