Egypt's unemployment rate fell to 6.1% during the second quarter of 2025
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics announced that Egypt's unemployment rate fell to 6.1% during the second quarter of 2025 (April-June), a decrease of 0.2% compared to the previous quarter. The results of the labor force survey for the second quarter (April-June) of 2025 revealed growth in the total labor force and the number of employed persons, while the number of unemployed persons decreased. The following are the most prominent indicators:
Labor force size
The labor force reached 33.614 million individuals during the second quarter of 2025, an increase of 0.5% compared to the previous quarter.
Unemployment rates
The number of unemployed persons reached 2.054 million, representing 6.1% of the total labor force. The unemployment rate among males decreased to 3.5%, and among females, it reached 15.8%. The 20-24 age group had the highest unemployment rate, recording 28.9%. The unemployment rate declined in urban areas to 9.7%, and in rural areas to 3.3%.
Unemployment by Educational Qualification
The percentage of unemployed individuals with intermediate and post-intermediate qualifications, and university degrees and above, reached 78.2% of the total unemployed. University degree holders and above constituted 44.8% of the total unemployed, the same percentage recorded in the same quarter of the previous year.
Distribution of Employed Persons by Economic Activity
The number of employed persons, which reached 31.559 million, was distributed across various economic sectors as follows:
Agriculture and Fishing: This activity ranked first with 21.3%, employing 6.709 million people.
Wholesale and Retail Trade: It ranked second with 16% of the total employed.
Manufacturing: accounted for 13.1% of the total workforce.
Construction: accounted for 11.5% of the total workforce.
Transportation and Storage: accounted for 8.6% of the total workforce.
Economic Contribution Rate
The economic contribution rate reached 45.5% of the total population aged 15 years and over. The contribution rate for males was 69.8%, while for females it reached 19.8%.
