HMD Beats Apple to Develop a Smartwatch with a Camera

A few months ago, there was talk of an Apple Watch with a built-in camera, but recent reports claim that Apple has finally abandoned the idea.

While Apple may have abandoned the idea, it appears that another company, HMD, is preparing to launch a smartwatch with a built-in camera. According to leaks on the X platform, HMD is working on two Wear OS watches, the Rubber 1 and Rubber 1S.

HMD's upcoming smartwatches: the Rubber 1 with a camera and the more affordable Rubber 1S, according to a report published by androidheadlines and reviewed by Al Arabiya Business. HMD's Rubber 1 is said to feature a 2-megapixel camera. You likely won't get sharper, more detailed photos with this sensor. However, it remains to be seen what relevant features the company plans to add to this sensor.

Health Tracking Features

This wearable is also expected to feature a decent 1.85-inch OLED display (which means bright and vibrant colors). It also has a 400mAh battery to ensure longevity. Additionally, it will likely come with standard health tracking features, such as heart rate and blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring. If you're a keen swimmer, the watch is rumored to be water-resistant up to 50 meters, allowing it to withstand submersion up to 50 meters. Then there's the HMD RUBBER 1S, a smaller model.

If you don't like a camera or prefer a budget phone, this model is for you. It's expected to come with a slightly smaller 1.07-inch OLED display and a 290mAh battery. However, it still retains useful heart rate and SpO2 tracking capabilities, as well as being water-resistant to a depth of 5 meters.

Gemini Watch-Related Capabilities

Integrating a camera into a modern smartwatch opens up vast possibilities. The report indicates that upcoming HMD wearables will run Wear OS, with all that it entails. Google has already confirmed that it will integrate its Gemini AI assistant into watches as well.

The camera sensor would be ideal for taking advantage of Gemini Live's multimedia capabilities directly from your wrist. You'll no longer need to take your smartphone out of your pocket to get information about things around you, for example. If the leak is true, we'll finally have a smartwatch with a camera.
