The United Nations Security Council plans to vote on a resolution proposed by the United Arab Emirates concerning the situation in the Gaza Strip on Monday.
The meeting, scheduled for 3:00 PM New York time, is titled "The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue."
The new draft, drawn up by the United Arab Emirates and seen by AFP, calls for an “urgent and sustainable cessation of hostilities to allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access in the Gaza Strip.”
It also affirms support for a two-state solution in the region and “stresses the importance of unifying the Gaza Strip with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.”
An unnamed U.S. source told Reuters that the United States delegation seeks to alter the language of the document. "We have engaged constructively and transparently throughout the entire process in an effort to unite around a product that will pass. The UAE knows exactly what can pass and what cannot — it is up to them if they want to get this done."
The negotiations regarding the wording of the document are reportedly ongoing.
UN officials and aid agencies have raised alarms about "a humanitarian crisis" in Gaza, including mass starvation and disease, as a vast majority of the region's 2.3 million people have been displaced during the ongoing two-month conflict.
The UN General Assembly earlier last week voted in favor of the ceasefire in Gaza. 153 member states support the non-binding resolution.
