UAE Calls for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza at UNSC

UAE’s UN representative reaffirms the need for an immediate ceasefire

The United Arab Emirates has strongly condemned the air strikes by Israel targeting the Jabalia refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, which resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries. The UAE underscored that indiscriminate attacks will result in irreparable ramifications in the region.

Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), called for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip. The session, requested by the UAE, underscored the spiraling crisis where the vulnerable bear the brunt of the conflict, with 70% of the casualties being women and children.

Nusseibeh spoke of the 11,000 displaced people sheltered in Al-Quds hospital, highlighting the unrealistic demand for its evacuation. She also drew attention to the threats faced by all residents in Gaza and the hostages held by Hamas, their lives hanging by a thread in the volatile conflict.

The UAE’s UN representative said that hospitals and UNRWA schools are protected sites under international law, and announcements that they need to be evacuated do not make it legal to target them. She also highlighted the rise in violence in the occupied West Bank amid Israel’s ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip and condemned the rising attacks on healthcare and UNRWA facilities.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) reaffirmed the need for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of life, stressing the importance of protecting civilians, according to international humanitarian law, international treaties, and the need to ensure that they are not targeted during conflict.

Furthermore, the Ministry stressed the importance of the United Nations General Assembly resolution which calls for a humanitarian truce in Gaza and a cessation of hostilities. The Ministry underscored that the resolution is an important step towards de-escalation, protecting civilians, preserving their lives as well as ensuring an immediate, safe, sustainable, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.

The UAE reiterates that the continued lack of a political horizon risks catastrophic repercussions, and disregarding the potential consequences would lead to devastating outcomes for the prospects of peace and stability in the region.

Since 21 October, only 94 humanitarian aid trucks have been able to arrive through the Rafah crossing, but Israel has not allowed any fuel into Gaza, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent. The Compassion for Gaza campaign is central to the UAE's efforts to display solidarity with and support for the people of Palestine. President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed this month directed $20 million in aid for the Palestinian people.

He has also held talks with a number of world leaders since the start of the conflict, to call for civilian lives to be protected, crucial aid to be delivered and to reaffirm the need for a ceasefire. The Emirates Red Crescent Authority has opened donation centers across the UAE to collect aid for families affected by the Israel-Gaza war.
