The Iraqi President, Abdul Latif Rashid, met on Tuesday with the Saudi ambassador to Iraq, Abdulaziz Al-Shammari, in Baghdad where they discussed ways to strengthen relations between the two countries, according to a press statement issued by the Iraqi Presidency.
Rashid expressed the depth of the historical ties between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and his desire to maintain these strong relations to serve the interests of both countries, and to contribute to supporting the security and stability of the region, the statement mentioned.
Al-Shammari explained that Saudi Arabia is keen to strengthen communication mechanisms with Iraq in various fields, according to the statement.
Al-Shammari also thanked the Iraqi President for supporting all efforts aiming to strengthen the cooperation between Iraq and Saudi Arabia to serve the aspirations of the people of both countries.
The relations between Iraq and Saudi Arabia developed rapidly over the past few years, after they were resumed in 2015.
The relations between Baghdad and Riyadh had been severed since 1990, following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait.
