Saudi Arabia and Greece sign cooperation agreements

Saudi Crown Prince and Greek PM agreed to further enhance co-operation between the two countries

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman arrived in Greece as part of his first European tour since the Covid-19 pandemic, state news agency SPA reported.

According to SPA, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for cooperation in the energy sector, was signed between the Crown Prince and Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.

The MoU sets a framework for bilateral cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, electrical interconnection, exporting electricity to Greece and Europe, clean hydrogen, energy efficiency, oil, gas and petrochemical industry. In addition, it included adopting a circular economy approach to reduce the effects of climate change.

The MoU also promotes digital transformation and innovation in the fields of energy, cyber security, and working to develop qualitative partnerships between the two parties to localize materials, products and services related to all energy sectors and their associated supply chains and technologies.

Within the framework of this memorandum, joint research in the fields of energy with universities, research centers and others will be conducted. While working sessions, panel discussions, seminars, and multilateral conferences will be organized.

Meanwhile, the Saudi Telecom Company, the Greek Telecom Company and the Cyprus Telecom Company entered into a strategic partnership to build a data cable project, called Med Data Corridor (EMC) undersea and land fiber optic data cable that will link Europe with Asia. The cable project will ensure the smooth digital supply of data worldwide and strengthen the goals of the kingdom’s vision 2030.

The Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, hosted a banquet at the Acropolis Museum in Athens for the Saudi Crown Prince. They also witnessed the signing of a preliminary agreement between the two countries for co-operation in the cultural sector.

In recent decades, investors from both countries have collaborated on a number of joint ventures, and bilateral trade has played a prominent role in the flowering of their commercial relationship.

In 2020, Greek exports to Saudi Arabia were valued at $339.04 million, while its imports from the Kingdom stood at $620.57 million, according to the UN Comtrade database on international trade.

In September 2021, the Council of Saudi Chambers signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a Saudi-Greek Business Council to enhance bilateral trade and investment. In October that year, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek prime minister, in Riyadh to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
