Turkey's Erdogan announces visiting UAE

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that he is planning to pay an official visit to the United Arab Emirates in February, following warming relations and the resumption of ties between the two countries.

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, held talks with the Turkish President on Monday. Both leaders exchanged views over the phone about a number of international and regional issues of interest. They also discussed the prospects of strengthening relations between the UAE and Turkey.

The call came after a UAE delegation visiting Turkey met Mr Erdogan in Ankara last week to discuss ways to consolidate ties between the two countries, particularly in the fields of trade, transport, health and energy.

In November, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan traveled to Turkey in the highest-level Emirati visit to the country in nearly a decade. Ankara and Abu Dhabi inked a series of investment accords under which the UAE agreed to invest up to $10 billion in Turkey’s economy.

Erdogan told a group of journalists that the crown prince’s visit took place in an “almost family like” environment and hailed the visit as a “step that is instrumental in starting a new era between Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.”

The planned visit to the UAE comes at a critical time for Turkey, where it is experiencing another currency crisis triggered by Erdogan’s unconventional economic policies.

Turkey is also trying to mend its frayed ties with regional powers after finding itself increasingly isolated internationally.

Since its founding in 1971, the UAE has extended generous support to other countries to advance their own developmental goals. This commitment to global peace and prosperity comes in many forms, including advocacy, partnership building, and provision of foreign aid.

Following the direction set by the nation's founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, UAE foreign assistance expresses openness to the world in line with the belief that contributions to other countries' peace, security, and prosperity can strengthen everyone in return.
