Renaissance Dam and Nile River Crisis

US Efforts to Find a Solution to the Grand Ethiopian

US President Donald Trump confirmed that his country will attempt to resolve the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Nile River crisis between Egypt and Ethiopia.

Attempts to Find a Solution

During a press conference with Mark Rutte, the current Secretary-General of NATO, at the White House on Monday, he added that Washington will attempt to reach a solution to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and Nile River issue. Trump also announced that he will work to resolve the issue between Egypt and Ethiopia, because the lives of Egyptians depend on the waters of the Nile.

The US President had previously addressed the Nile River water problem last June, writing on his Truth Social account that he believed he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize if he succeeded in forcing peace between Egypt and Ethiopia, despite the latter's construction of a massive dam that reduces the flow of Nile water to the downstream countries of Sudan and Egypt.

The Crisis Renews

It is worth noting that the crisis between Egypt and Ethiopia had resurfaced last week following the Ethiopian Prime Minister's announcement that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam would be officially opened next September. In recent years, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) issue has continued to spark disagreement between Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia due to the lack of agreement on its operation and filling.

Engineer Hani Sweilem, Egypt's Minister of Irrigation, affirmed his country's categorical rejection of Ethiopia's continued policy of imposing a fait accompli through unilateral measures related to the Nile River. He added that Ethiopia has consistently promoted the completion of the dam, which is illegal and in violation of international law, despite the failure to reach a binding agreement with the downstream countries and despite the substantial reservations expressed by Egypt and Sudan.

In previous statements to Yasser Sorour, Egypt's Assistant Foreign Minister for Sudan Affairs, stated that diplomatic efforts regarding the dam have not ceased, stressing that his country continues to explain the issue at the technical and political levels, as it is an existential issue for Egypt and is linked to the existence and lives of the Egyptian people.

It is worth noting that the fourth and final meeting of the GERD negotiations, held at the end of 2023, failed, yielding no results. Egypt attributed the failure of the meetings to the persistence of Ethiopia's refusal over the past years to adopt any compromise technical or legal solutions that would safeguard the interests of the three countries, and to Ethiopia's continued reneging on the understandings reached that served its declared interests.
