Reports received by the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) confirmed the killing of Qatari human rights defender Nouf Al-Maadeed after her return from the UK.
According to these reports, Al-Maadeed was abducted by family members late on the evening of October 13, 2021, when she arrived to Qatar from the UK. Her flight, based on the government's promise to giver her protection and safety, was concluded in blood.
Al-Maadeed was promised safety upon her arrival to Qatar. When she arrived, higher officials ordered the police officers accompanying her to "remove their protection and hand her over to the family," which they did. Members of the family allegedly murdered her on the same night, according to the reports, which the government has yet to confirm.
Al-Maadeed mentioned in a video that she had been subjected to 3 failed murder attempts by her family.
She said that "her father entered the courtyard of the hotel where she was staying, despite being one of her main perpetrators, and the reason for her fleeing her home."
She added in her tweet that "Sheikh Tamim is the only one who can stop the danger to my life with his own hands."
Al-Maadeed had fled her home due to the violence she faced from her family, and the failure of the authorities to offer her protection. After arriving in the UK, she applied for political asylum, which she withdrew before her last return.
