Dubai Supreme Council of Energy: Transitioning to Clean Energy Sources Is No Longer an Option

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer: We Reaffirm Our Commitment to Continued Investment in Innovation, Research and Development, and Strengthening Effective Partnerships to Enable a Comprehensive Transition to Clean Energy

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), affirmed that the transition to clean and renewable energy sources is no longer an option, but a national and humanitarian responsibility imposed by the challenges of climate change and the requirements of sustainable development.

Switching to clean energy sources is no longer an option

On the occasion of International Clean Energy Day 2026, Al Tayer said: “With the vision and guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him, and his brother, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, may God protect him, the UAE has solidified its leading global position in the transition to clean and renewable energy through strategic initiatives and projects that support achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”

He added: “Dubai has become a leading global model in adopting renewable and clean energy solutions through pioneering projects that set global benchmarks in sustainability and innovation.” Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 reflect the emirate’s commitment to generating 100% of its energy production capacity from clean sources by 2050.

This commitment to a sustainable green economy balances economic growth with environmental protection. It aims to increase the contribution of clean energy to the energy mix, expand solar energy projects, and leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and energy storage solutions to enhance production efficiency and ensure a continuous supply of clean energy.

Dubai’s strategy and Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050 are key components of this vision. Al Tayer continued: “The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the world’s largest single-site solar park based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, embodies Dubai’s ambition and its ability to transform strategic visions into tangible achievements that contribute to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy security, and supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

The park’s production capacity has increased to 3,860 megawatts and will reach more than 8,000 megawatts by 2030, instead of the previously planned 5,000 megawatts, which will contribute to reducing more than 8.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually.”

Al Tayer concluded: “On International Clean Energy Day, we reaffirm our commitment to continuing to invest in innovation, research and development, and to strengthening effective partnerships with the public and private sectors and international organizations to enable a comprehensive transition to clean energy and develop a more resilient and sustainable energy system that contributes to enhancing the UAE’s leadership in supporting global climate action.”
