Al Mazrouei.. Artificial Intelligence and Data Centers Drive Global Energy Demand
The UAE Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, affirmed that global energy demand is witnessing steady growth to meet the needs of artificial intelligence and large data centers.
He anticipated an increase in demand for all energy resources, including fossil fuels, which are part of the energy mix, and emphasized the UAE's readiness to contribute to meeting global demand by enhancing investments in the energy sector.
In statements to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) on the sidelines of the third edition of the UAE Energy Forum 2025, Al Mazrouei added that the launch of the sixth edition of the UAE Energy Status Report accurately reflects the country's energy transformation.
The UAE's clean energy production capacity has exceeded 12.4 gigawatts (GW), comprising 6.8 GW from renewable energy and 5.6 GW from peaceful nuclear energy. The target for renewable energy production capacity is 22 GW by 2031, representing more than 35% of the country's energy mix.
The UAE is looking to attract further new investments in the renewable energy sector, in line with global developments and the increasing global demand for renewable energy. By the end of 2024, the UAE had achieved approximately 90% of its AED 200 billion renewable energy investment plan, aimed at reaching this target by 2030.
The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure continues to leverage modern technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance energy efficiency and reduce consumption in government buildings. Projects have been launched that aim to reduce water and electricity consumption by up to 30%.
He stated that, in line with the leadership's directives, the UAE has an ambitious plan to supply large data centers with renewable electricity, while working to achieve a professional and sustainable balance in energy demand. This will enhance the UAE's position as a leading global hub for mega data centers. He pointed to the project to convert solar energy into electricity around the clock to power the largest mega data center in the region.
He explained that the UAE recognized early on the importance of the semiconductor industry through its leading companies worldwide. He noted that those who possess this industry can effectively participate in shaping the future of artificial intelligence. The UAE is among the key countries that have invested in advanced technologies and enablers that strengthen the nation's leadership in this vital field.
