Emirati Sheikha Al Nuwais Appointed Secretary-General of the UN Tourism Organization


The United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO), with the support of more than 160 countries, has appointed Emirati Sheikha Nasser Al Nuwais as its Secretary-General for the 2026-2029 term. This follows her initial nomination by the Executive Council last May, after completing all stages of the nomination and election process according to the organization's protocols.


Sheikha Al Nuwais holds a Bachelor's degree in Finance from Zayed University and boasts over 16 years of professional experience in the hospitality sector.  This experience underpins her strategic vision for developing global tourism, and her contributions extend to institutional and social work. She serves as Chair of the Tourism Working Group at the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 


A Board Member of the Abu Dhabi Businesswomen Council, a Member of the Advisory Council of the Emirates Tourism Council, and a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Les Roches Hospitality Academy. She continues her efforts to empower the economy, develop policies, and promote education within the sector.

For her part, Sheikha Al Nuwais expressed her appreciation to the member states and her confidence in their leadership for the next phase, emphasizing that tourism is "a bridge for human connection and a tool for promoting peace and development." 


She explained that her future vision is based on innovation, sustainability, developing human capital, supporting local communities, providing capacity-building programs, and facilitating access to finance, particularly for developing countries.


Meanwhile, the UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, Abdullah Al Marri, described the selection as "a pivotal historical moment" for the region and the world, affirming that the international consensus on the Emirati woman reflects the country's prominent position in tourism and its economic diplomacy, and reinforces its role in supporting sustainable tourism development and building bridges of communication between peoples.


He pointed out that this achievement is a result of the UAE leadership's approach of supporting excellence and innovation, and empowering national talent within international organizations. 


He affirmed the UAE's commitment to continuing to support the organization's programs and strengthening its international partnerships, while highlighting the pivotal role played by the UAE's aviation sector in connecting the world and facilitating tourism.
