Cairo commends the Arab League's adoption of the Saudi-Egyptian vision on regional security.

Egypt welcomed and appreciated the adoption by the Arab League Council at the ministerial level of the Saudi-Egyptian vision on regional security arrangements. The Egyptian-Saudi vision affirms the sovereignty of Arab states and adheres to the resolution of the Palestinian issue and the two-state solution.

The League adopted the decision taken by Arab foreign ministers during the 164th session held in Cairo on Thursday, with the blessing of the joint Saudi-Egyptian initiative to formulate a governing framework for regional security and cooperation based on the principles of international law and responsive to the delicate circumstances facing the region.

Egypt clarified that there is no room for allowing any party to dominate the region or impose unilateral security arrangements that would undermine its security and stability. It explained that regional security can only be achieved through strict adherence to the governing principles enshrined in the resolution, foremost among which are respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, non-interference in their internal affairs, and refraining from the use of military force outside the framework of international legitimacy.

Egypt stated that the resolution affirms the inherent right of Arab states to formulate governing principles for regional arrangements. It unequivocally affirms that Arab states have the right to propose and impose their will and vision for building a security and cooperation system based on mutual respect, good neighborliness, adherence to the rules of international law, and the peaceful settlement of disputes. It also emphasizes that ending the occupation is the true path to a just and sustainable peace.

Egypt emphasized that the adoption of the resolution reflects a responsible Arab leadership role in formulating clear rules for enhancing security and cooperation, and sends a message that regional stability can only be achieved through respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, rejecting policies of coercion and the imposition of fait accompli, ending the occupation, and opening a political and economic horizon that achieves peace and prosperity for the peoples of the region.

Egypt stressed its commitment to working with other Arab countries and international partners to translate the resolution into practical steps that enhance regional security and restore momentum to the path of a just and comprehensive settlement of the Palestinian issue.  It also supports an Arab-regional cooperation system based on mutual interests, equal respect for international law, and the security and sovereignty of the countries of the region.

It pledged to continue exerting pressure to adopt decisive positions to halt Israeli violations, emphasizing that the continued impasse in the prospects for a settlement represents a major factor in destabilizing the region and the spread of extremism, hatred, and violence regionally and internationally.

On Thursday, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, announced that Saudi Arabia and Egypt had submitted a draft resolution to the Arab Ministerial Council on Arab-Arab cooperation in the Middle East, which includes a set of foundations and principles.

He added that the resolution affirms the principle of the sovereignty of Arab states, rejects any Israeli insinuations that would undermine their sovereignty, and adheres to a solution to the Palestinian issue based on the principle of a two-state solution.

The ministers discussed a number of political, economic, social, legal, financial, and administrative issues, including the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israeli violations in Jerusalem, Arab water security, and Israel's theft of water from the occupied territories and the Syrian Golan Heights. They also discussed developments in Libya, Yemen, Sudan, and Somalia, solidarity with Lebanon, navigation security and energy supplies in the Arabian Gulf region, and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
