From Egypt... A sanitation worker earns a master's degree in law and prepares for a doctorate

From the streets of Beheira Governorate, northern Egypt, a new story of struggle and ambition has emerged. Its hero is a simple sanitation worker named Mohamed Othman Salam, 48 years old, who has been working in sanitation for more than two decades. He was honored, his status was regularized, and he was given an administrative position commensurate with his qualifications and academic standing.

Mohamed's story began when he challenged the harshness of life and the difficulties of his profession. He refused to surrender to reality. He took on a bigger dream and pursued education with determination and resolve, recently earning a master's degree in law and is currently preparing for a doctorate.

The simple worker recounted his story, saying that he began his career in 1999 with the Beheira City Council as a sanitation worker, content with a diploma at the time. He added that he did not stop there, but rather saw education as his only weapon to change his life.

He added that he worked from early morning on the city streets, and despite the arduous work, he was keen to study daily from 8:00 PM until 10:00 PM. He noted that he never felt that his work as a cleaner would undermine him or hinder his ambition. Rather, it taught him the value of life and provided a strong motivation for him to change his situation.

He said that in 2011, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at Alexandria University through the open learning system. After five years of continuous study, he obtained a bachelor's degree in 2016. He then continued his postgraduate studies, earning two diplomas in administrative law and public law, before culminating in a master's degree in law.

Salam emphasized that his ambitions will not stop there, as he aspires to continue his journey to obtain a doctorate. Mohamed Salam's achievements are not limited to his personal success alone; he sees them extending to his four children: Mahmoud, Shadia, Iman, and Rahma. He explained that all of his children are enrolled in education and excel at all levels.

Mohamed Salam's story resonated widely within and outside Beheira Governorate, prompting Dr. Jacqueline Azer, Governor of Beheira, to officially honor him. She also issued directives to regularize his status and provide him with an administrative position commensurate with his academic qualifications and status.

A move described as a powerful message that the state values its people and celebrates their successes. It was also decided that Mohamed Salam would transfer to his new position as a legal researcher in the governorate, giving him enough time to pursue his dream of earning a doctorate.
