Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: Aid Distribution Continues Today Without Incidents
The US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation reported that aid distribution continued in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday without incident, adding that it has opened a second distribution site in the Palestinian enclave.
The foundation also stated in a statement, "Approximately 14,550 food boxes have been distributed at the two sites so far. Each box is sufficient to feed 5.5 people for 3.5 days, for a total of 840,262 meals." The foundation is working to open four sites and said it "plans to establish additional sites across Gaza in the coming weeks."
47 injured
Earlier, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said today that 47 people were injured while trying to receive food aid yesterday at distribution sites in the Gaza Strip run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Ajith Sungai, head of the OHCHR office in the occupied Palestinian territory, told reporters in Geneva, citing information from partners on the ground, "47 people were injured by gunfire," adding that the shooter was the Israeli army.
Thousands rush in
Thousands of Palestinians rushed toward a new aid distribution center run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation in the western Rafah area of the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday afternoon, as Israel began implementing a new aid distribution system. The incident came days after Israel began easing the blockade on the Gaza Strip, which has been in place since March 2nd and has caused severe shortages of food, medicine, water, fuel, and other basic necessities.
Israel recently announced its cooperation with this organization to distribute aid in Gaza, saying the goal was to ensure that aid does not reach Hamas. But the foundation has faced accusations of assisting Israel in achieving its military objectives, excluding Palestinians, bypassing UN organizations, and failing to adhere to humanitarian principles.
"Painful Images"
"We have seen the video coming out of Gaza of one of the distribution points established by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. Frankly, these videos and images are very painful," UN Secretary-General's spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said Tuesday. "As the Secretary-General indicated last week, we and our partners have a detailed and sound plan, supported by Member States, to deliver aid to populations in need."
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation was established and registered in Geneva in February and has no known offices or representatives in the city, which hosts the headquarters of international humanitarian organizations.
