WFP: Few bakeries resume bread production in Gaza
The World Food Programme announced on Thursday that "a small number of bakeries" in Gaza have resumed bread production and distribution after trucks carrying aid were allowed into the Strip.
"A number of bakeries in southern and central Gaza have resumed bread production after dozens of trucks were finally able to receive their shipments from the Kerem Shalom border crossing and deliver them overnight," the programme said in a statement. "These bakeries are now distributing bread through hot meal kitchens," it added.
29 children and elderly people have died
Palestinian Health Minister Majed Abu Ramadan announced that 29 children and elderly people had died of hunger-related causes in Gaza over the past two days. He also confirmed on Thursday that thousands more are at risk, according to Reuters.
Israel announced yesterday that it had approved the entry of approximately 100 trucks into the devastated Palestinian enclave, after allowing 93 trucks to pass last Tuesday and approximately 10 on Monday, according to its statement. The United Nations indicated yesterday that it had begun distributing aid equivalent to 90 truckloads of aid in Gaza.
Since last March, following the collapse of a fragile truce with Hamas, Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on Gaza, accusing the movement of diverting supplies intended for civilians. Meanwhile, UN warnings have escalated of the deteriorating humanitarian situation, with hunger spreading across several areas of the Strip.
