Overwhelmingly... 120 Countries Support the Egyptian Resolution

The 69th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference adopted the Egyptian resolution on the application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East on Friday by an overwhelming majority, with 120 countries supporting the Egyptian resolution, reflecting broad international support for the resolution and its objectives.

The resolution calls for all nuclear facilities in the Middle East to be subject to IAEA safeguards without exception, for all countries in the region to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and for the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Office of the Spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The adoption of the resolution comes within the framework of Egypt's tireless efforts to achieve disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation, especially in the Middle East, and to push towards the universalization of the NPT and the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. It also calls for the international community to fulfill its responsibilities in implementing all legal obligations under the treaty.
