Britain warns of a third wave of coronavirus if lockdown measures are not implemented properly
Britain has warned of a third wave of coronavirus if lockdown measures are not implemented properly. In addition, British virology experts have confirmed the success of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, explaining that trial results have proven its effectiveness, as have other announced vaccines.
This comes as a Reuters tally shows that more than 61.77 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus worldwide, while the total number of deaths from the virus has reached 1,446,899. Infections with the virus have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were discovered in China in December 2019.
In an interview with CBC, Professor Stephen Evans, a specialist in epidemiology, said, "The data and results confirm that the (Russian) vaccine is sufficiently effective, and they are consistent with what we have seen with other vaccines." Evans explained that the effectiveness of the Sputnik V vaccine and other vaccines "is an important message to health scientists around the world, confirming the ability to combat these viruses with vaccines."
In a related context, Ian Jones, a professor of virology at the University of Reading in the UK, said: "I don't see any reason to doubt these (results). It could be argued that the initial Sputnik V trial results caused confusion, but I think that's not because they were unfounded, but simply because they were released a little early. This vaccine will certainly be a useful vaccine," according to the Russian news agency Novosti.
