Egypt Gifts Magdi Yacoub the Key to Aswan... and Names One of Its Most Important Streets After Him

The Aswan Governorate gifted the world-renowned surgeon a key to the city and confirmed that it is coordinating with him to name the axis and bridge following the reservoir after him, as a gesture of gratitude and recognition of his prominent national symbol and humanitarian icon.

Egypt announced that it will honor world-renowned heart surgeon Dr. Magdi Yacoub by awarding him the key to Aswan. The Aswan Governorate gifted the world-renowned surgeon a key to the city and confirmed that it is coordinating with him to name the axis and bridge following the reservoir after him, as a gesture of gratitude and recognition of his prominent national symbol and humanitarian icon, and in recognition of his contribution to transforming the city into a destination for medical tourism.

The Aswan Governorate said in an official statement  that "Major General Dr. Ismail Kamal, Governor of the Aswan Governorate, presented the city key to Dr. Magdi Yacoub in appreciation of his national role and the humanitarian, medical, scientific, and research mission he provides to the entire world, as well as his contributions to providing free, sophisticated, and high-quality medical services."

The governorate affirmed its commitment to providing full support "to complete the provision of services to Dr. Yacoub's Heart Center, as well as to continue developing the area surrounding the center and intensifying public cleaning efforts on the road leading to it, so that it can always be a respectable destination for patients visiting it from inside and outside Egypt."

Dr. Magdi Yacoub Heart Center

It is worth noting that the Magdi Yacoub Heart Center in Aswan performs more than 4,500 medical procedures annually, including open-heart surgeries and cardiac catheterizations. Furthermore, more than 45,000 patients are examined in its clinics annually.

The center includes 100 beds distributed across several departments, including an intensive care unit for children and adults, two operating rooms equipped with the American capsule system, a hotel care department, a cardiac catheterization department, outpatient clinics, hotel rooms for patients, and a scientific research and training department to prepare human resources and a second generation of highly qualified young doctors, nurses, and technicians to treat patients and contribute to alleviating their pain.

A New Medical Achievement

Months ago, Yaqoub announced a new medical achievement in the field of heart valve implants, which will give valve patients new hope of obtaining natural heart valves that grow naturally inside the body. He stated that an initial group of more than 50 patients will undergo valve implants made of fibers, which can be implanted to integrate with the body's cells and, over time, create a living valve composed entirely of the patient's own tissue. This will permanently end the valve replacement procedures currently being performed, which are not without their many flaws.

Yacoub added that the new technology represents great hope for valve patients, especially children born with heart defects who undergo multiple valve replacement surgeries before reaching adulthood. He noted that the new valves can grow as the child grows, becoming one with the patient's body.

It's worth noting that Dr. Magdi Yacoub, 90, is a Knight of the Order of the British Empire and has been honored internationally in several countries for his contributions to cardiac surgery and his charitable work. He has received titles and decorations from leading universities around the world. Since 1962, he has performed approximately 25,000 surgeries in British hospitals, including 2,500 heart transplants.
