Al-Ahly opens Club World Cup campaign with a draw against Inter Miami

Egyptian side Al-Ahly missed the chance to secure three points against American side Inter Miami, settling for a goalless draw on Sunday in the opening match of the revamped Club World Cup in the United States.

Mahmoud Hassan (Trezeguet) missed a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, saved by Argentine goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, who, along with Al-Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, played a key role in each team earning a point at the start of the campaign. With this result, each team earned its first point in Group A, which also includes Porto of Portugal and Palmeiras of Brazil.

This edition marks the first application of the expanded format of the competition, featuring clubs from all continents, and concludes with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on July 13. Al-Ahly further extended its record as the team with the most matches played in the Club World Cup.The club played its 26th match in the Club World Cup, its tenth participation, against Inter Miami.

Before participating in the current edition of the Club World Cup, Al Ahly had achieved 10 wins, ranking second in the list of teams with the most wins in the tournament, two wins behind Real Madrid (the leaders). It also drew one match and suffered 14 losses. Its players scored 31 goals, making it the second-highest scoring team in the competition, nine goals behind Real Madrid, while conceding 39 goals.
