'Biological' Definition of Woman
UK Supreme Court Upholds 'Biological' Definition of Woman
The UK Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that the country's Equality Act defines a woman as being biologically born female. Justice Patrick Hodge said that five judges unanimously ruled that "the term 'woman' in the Equality Act refers to a biological woman."
This ruling means that a transgender man who holds a certificate identifying him as female should not be considered a woman in Britain under the law. This decision defined "woman" in British law in its classic way and sparked controversy among left-wing activists, who considered the decision "unfair" to transgender people.
The case stems from a law passed by the Scottish Parliament in 2018, which stipulated that women must be 50 percent represented on the boards of Scottish public bodies. This law included transgender women in its definition of woman.
