Launch of a wind farm development project in the UAE.. Providing electricity to 36,000 homes

A project to develop a wind farm in the UAE in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi has been officially launched, in a move that will support efforts to diversify the country's electricity mix and increase the share of renewable energy.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company, a leading integrated coordination company for planning, purchasing, supplying, managing and operating water and electricity transmission network systems across the UAE, announced the issuance of requests for proposals for the Al-Sila wind power plant development project according to the independent producer model.

The new wind farm in the UAE is scheduled to be developed near the country's first utility-scale wind energy program in Al-Sila City, in the Al Dhafra region. Once fully operational, the Al-Sila wind power plant will contribute to producing about 140 megawatts of renewable energy, which is enough to supply 36,000 homes with electricity and eliminate about 190,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Al Sila Wind Power Plant

The Al Sila Wind Power Plant project builds on Abu Dhabi’s existing wind power plants located in Al Sila, Sir Bani Yas Island and Delma Island. The new project will increase Abu Dhabi’s wind power capacity to around 240 megawatts. The UAE has launched a wind energy programme as part of an ambitious plan for the country to increase the share of clean energy in the energy mix from 25% to 50% by 2050, through renewable energy and nuclear energy.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Chief Executive Officer of Asset Development and Management at Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said that the Al Sila Wind Power Plant project represents a major step in the journey to diversify the electricity mix in the UAE, and enhance Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional hub for innovation in the field of renewable energy at the utility scale.

Wind Energy in the UAE

The Al-Sila Wind Power Plant Project includes the development, financing, construction, operation, maintenance and ownership of a new wind power plant, in addition to the associated infrastructure works. The winning company or consortium will hold a 40% stake in the project, while the Abu Dhabi government will indirectly own the remaining stake in the project.

The winning developer of the project will enter into a long-term power purchase agreement with Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC), as the sole buyer of the water and electricity produced in Abu Dhabi. The power purchase agreement will be structured so that EWEC pays only for the net electricity produced by the plant. All companies and consortiums must submit their bids to EWEC during the second quarter of 2025.
