UAE to launch the 6th generation of mobile networks

The UAE's 6G Roadmap

The UAE Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) has announced an extensive strategy aimed at spearheading research and studies related to the advancement of “International Mobile Telecommunications” (IMT2030) technology, also known as the sixth generation of mobile networks (6G).

This initiative is a proactive response to the ever-changing landscape of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), focusing on detailed technical specifications for the functionality and performance of mobile systems. Its objective is to address the evolving needs of society and the economy, bridging the gap between current communication services and future requirements. It also aims to drive a comprehensive, digitally integrated, and interconnected way of life in the coming years.

The release of this roadmap is in line with the decisions made during the Radiocommunication Assembly 2023 (RA-23), which took place in the UAE from November 13th to 17th, 2023. During the assembly, a resolution was passed urging stakeholders in the communications sector to focus on developing radio technical standards and specifications for the sixth generation of the International Mobile Service (IMT).

It’s worth noting that the RA-23 endorsed Recommendation (ITU-R M.2160), which pertains to the 6G framework referred to as IMT-2030, laying the foundation for the future development of network standards.

The roadmap seamlessly aligns with TDRA’s strategic direction of advancing infrastructure through state-of-the-art technological methodologies. It places paramount emphasis on enhancing digital infrastructure, with a specific focus on harnessing the capabilities of 6G. These capabilities include integrated sensing, extensive coverage, and the integration of artificial intelligence, which aim to drive comprehensive intelligence.

The roadmap is meticulously designed, taking into account complexities associated with promoting environmental sustainability practices, bridging the digital divide, connecting the unconnected, and fortifying privacy and security measures.

It is important to highlight that the UAE's 6G Roadmap aligns seamlessly with global sustainability goals, actively working towards the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions and energy consumption across diverse industries. This ambitious undertaking reflects the UAE's dedication to upholding its leading position in telecommunications innovation, aiming to deliver high-quality, smart, and secure connectivity to benefit both, its society and economy.
