UAE celebrates International Day of Peace

UAE the global capital for peace and tolerance

On the notable occasion of the International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21st, it is important to emphasize the United Arab Emirates unwavering commitment to promoting peace and enhancing global stability.

In the past, the UAE has demonstrated its pledge to promoting love and tolerance among all nations through its sustained efforts to make the world a better place.

The UAE's commitment to spreading the values of peace is exemplified by its initiation of a range of international awards that recognize and reward institutions and individuals actively involved in disseminating the culture of peace and tolerance globally.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, instituted in 2019, is a prestigious accolade honouring individuals and entities that champion peaceful coexistence across the world. Named after the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE and a devoted advocate of peace and tolerance, this award carries a substantial financial prize of US$ one million.

It is presented annually on 4th February, designated as the International Day for Human Fraternity. The award acknowledges individuals and organisations from diverse backgrounds who tirelessly work towards promoting the values of solidarity, integrity, fairness, and optimism.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, said that the wise and strong leadership of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has made the United Arab Emirates a country of progress, prosperity, and stability.

Under the wise leadership of our president, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates is a society that has moved away from viewing others through the lens of ignorance, suspicion, stereotype, and intolerance. We are a society with solid foundations, committed to the peaceful pursuit of solutions to the conflicts and problems of humankind.", the minister added.

Over the past five decades, the UAE has taken an active role in numerous international peacekeeping endeavors. With a primary objective of alleviating the dire impacts of conflicts and wars on affected societies, the UAE has consistently emerged as a leading contributor to humanitarian relief and post-conflict reconstruction initiatives in regions grappling with strife and turmoil.

Pope Francis has hailed the UAE for its role in promoting peace, tolerance and coexistence around the globe. He also praised President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed for his commitment to these principles, for his work in combating diseases worldwide and to the principles of the “Document on Human Fraternity”.

He said the document, signed during his visit to the UAE in 2019, was a road map for peace. “The greatness of any country is not measured solely by its wealth but by its substantial role in spreading the values of peace, brotherhood, coexistence and defending them,” he said.

The International Day of Peace (IDP) is celebrated annually on 21st September. It is a day dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace through non-violence and ceasefire. This year's theme is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals”.
