The challenging humanitarian situation in Somalia

5.9 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance in Somalia under outgoing president Farmaajo. Conflict in Mogadishu between pro-government and pro-opposition military forces and increased Al-Shabaab attacks result in displacement and humanitarian crisis.

The country also has a high number of refugees who have left the country, with more than 3.6 million who have been displaced by conflict, insecurity, forced evictions, droughts, and floods.

The UN mission in Somalia UNSOM expressed grave concern about the impact of the fighting between Somali forces backed by Galmudug soldiers and the Ahlu Sunna on civilians.

The conflict has forced more than 100,000 people, mostly women and children, to flee from their homes to outside villages, facing severe water shortages and drought conditions. The displaced people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, and that there are security and financial constraints that have left aid inadequate.

Opposition candidates have called for an end to the bloodshed, with the Farmajo-led outgoing Somali government still remaining silent as it is involved in the hostilities.

Insecurity, clan disputes, protests, the weakness of the national forces, the gradual withdrawal of the African Union Mission in Somalia and the continuing Al Shabaab attacks cause insecurity and instability across Somalia.

Some parts of Somalia are under the control of Al-Shabaab, and the Federal Government has limited influence in these areas. The extent of the Federal Government’s control and influence varies from region to region and affects the reach of humanitarian organizations in the country, who often have to negotiate with different authorities to access target areas.

Conflict driven by AlShabaab and interclan rivalry has continued throughout the third quarter of 2021 and escalated in Mogadishu following a political crisis. This makes humanitarian operations in Somalia challenging and unstable.
