The Turkish newspaper "Zaman" reported that a Turkish Airlines hospitality crew submitted an application for asylum in Canada.
The newspaper pointed out that some crew members of the Turkish Airlines plane, which was bound for Canada, left their ID cards and passports at the hotel and applied for asylum in this country.
Satchkin Kochak, head of the Airline Employees Union, made a statement about the incident saying that the asylum was based on poor living conditions.
He pointed to the high fragility of Turkey and the uncertainty that dominates the people there, stressing that there are many social factors behind the hospitality staff’s decision, “they may see this as a way out of a predicament.”
Turks who had never thought twice about poverty are now turning to NGOs for help. As Erdogan peppers his daily speeches with imagery of the country "rebounding" and growing into "one of the largest economies in the world", Turks are slipping into poverty.
Erdogan has promised to unveil a new economic reform package in what appears to be an acknowledgement of the level of public discontent.
His government also faced increased criticism over its apparent poor response and inadequate preparedness for large-scale wildfires. Erdogan himself was accused of insensitivity after he threw bags of tea at residents from a bus during a weekend visit to the fire-hit Antalya region.
