Turks are starving, Erdogan doesn't care

The first released images of Erdogan's $74 million palace north of Marmaris come as much of the Turkish public grapples with increased poverty and record levels of inflation .

The release of the images outraged Turkish civilians struggling to provide food for their families, coincided with widely derided comments from Erdogan’s wife Emine, who suggested people reduce their meal portions to prevent waste.

“The president has always said he represents ordinary people, and he came from humble roots himself, but now we see that he lives like a sultan while everyone else struggles,” a 71-year-old pensioner who sells tissues in Istanbul, told the press.

Burak Erbay, an opposition MP in Muğla, where the new palace was built, said that Turkish people are “sick and tired” of such hypocrisy from their country’s leaders.

Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said "People are starving, but he doesn't care. He built a summer palace for himself," Kılıçdaroğlu told his party's parliamentary group.

"I address my brothers and sisters voting for the AKP. If wasting is a sin and you still vote for them, you sin, too. There is luxury, bribery and corruption," he said.

"We asked them what they did with 128 billion dollars of Central Bank reserves. It's not clear to whom it was sold. They robbed the money of the martyrs and veterans of July 15 "2016 coup attempt".
