Tourists move freely in Turkey despite COVID-19 surge

Turkey is seeing a massive surge in coronavirus cases. Daily coronavirus deaths rose to a record 235 in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total death toll to 16,881, health ministry data showed on Tuesday.

The country also recorded 32,102 new coronavirus cases, including asymptomatic ones, in the last 24 hours. For four months, Ankara only reported daily symptomatic cases but has reported all cases since Nov. 25.

Amid a spike in the number of coronavirus cases across Turkey, Istanbul instituted a lockdown, following in the footsteps of many other European countries grappling with another wave. However, the strict lockdown is in effect on weekends only. It also doesn't apply to tourists.

While Istanbul locals were forced to stay inside between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday, international tourists were able to freely walk around the city.

Turkey ranks third globally in the highest number of daily cases, behind the United States and Brazil.

local sources said that they believed that the government purposefully misrepresented the number of cases for months, making the situation look better than it really was.

Turkey's government has been accused by the Turkish Medical Association of underreporting cases by only counting those positive cases that displayed symptoms, instead of all positive cases.
