Abu Bakr: We Export 90% of Production
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) Sticks to Investment Plans
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) Chief Marketing Officer Adel Abu Bakr said that the company is sticking to its investment plans to increase production and recycling of the metal despite the US-Israeli war on Iran.
EGA, which was forced to halt operations at its Al Taweelah smelter in the UAE following an Iranian attack in late March, is building its first new primary aluminum smelter in the United States in nearly 50 years in partnership with Century Aluminium.
"I think from an investment perspective, there is little change... We are working hard to fully restart all our operations in the UAE and support our customers around the world. We export 90% of our production," Abu Bakr said during a panel discussion at the CRU Global Aluminium Summit on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
He added: “As for growth, I don’t think anything will change. We are moving forward… in the recycling sector. Regarding primary production, we announced a project in Oklahoma, and it is progressing according to plan.” He indicated that the Emirati company hopes to begin construction on the project this year.
Emirates Global Aluminium owns a 60% stake in the US smelter, which the Oklahoma Department of Commerce expects to cost $4 billion. The smelter is slated to produce 750,000 tons of aluminum annually, more than double current US production.
Abu Bakr told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference that the company’s other smelter in Jebel Ali, UAE, is operating as usual despite the ongoing conflict.
