Food and Drug Security in the UAE: A System Ready to Face Fluctuations
Amid regional geopolitical tensions and the challenges they pose to global supply chains, the UAE stands out as a model of proactive planning and integrated policies to ensure food and drug security, underpinned by a strong and resilient economy capable of withstanding changes.
The UAE has established an integrated system that combines strategic reserves, diversified import sources, enhanced local production, and the development of regulatory frameworks for the pharmaceutical sector. This strengthens its readiness to face any emerging challenges and ensures the long-term sustainability of food and health security.
Economic Readiness
The relevant authorities in the UAE have affirmed their continuous monitoring of the repercussions of regional escalation, with full readiness to take the necessary measures to ensure the stability of the economy and the business sector, the continuity of services, and the protection of supply chains and vital sectors.
She emphasized that all economic and financial activities are proceeding normally, and that the adopted reserves and policies are sufficient to contain any temporary fluctuations, under full coordination among the relevant authorities to ensure economic stability and manage the financial and development sectors within institutional frameworks capable of absorbing shocks.
The country is also closely monitoring developments in international shipping and trade, while implementing approved plans to ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy and essential goods supplies and providing readily available logistical alternatives when needed.
Strategic Stockpiles
The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism affirmed the stability of local markets, noting that the strategic stockpile of essential goods is highly efficient and comprehensively diversified, meeting market needs for extended and reassuring periods.
The Ministry explained that all food and non-food items are available in ample quantities at retail outlets, with close monitoring of supplier stock levels through an electronic price monitoring system. This system allows for continuous data collection and analysis, and periodic assessments to ensure no potential shortages occur and to reinforce price stability.
Minister of Economy and Tourism Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri stated that the import of goods and the flow of merchandise are proceeding normally, with no indications of supply disruptions or product shortages. He emphasized that major retail outlets have not observed any unusual changes in import or storage operations.
Long-Term Strategy
At the local production level, a report issued by Alpen Capital indicated that the "Food Security Strategy 2051" aims to triple food production by 2030. This will be achieved by focusing on modern technologies such as vertical farming, improving the efficiency of traditional agriculture, and promoting foreign investment in agricultural land, particularly in East Africa.
Enhancing Drug Security and Breaking Monopolies
In parallel with food security, the UAE has taken significant steps to enhance drug security. The Emirates Drug Authority announced the activation of a new mechanism requiring pharmaceutical companies to appoint more than one agent for each medical product marketed in the country. This is in accordance with Federal Decree-Law No. (38) of 2024 concerning medical products, the pharmacy profession, and pharmaceutical establishments.
This step aims to break the monopoly for the first time, reduce the risk of supply disruptions in emergencies, and ensure the continuous availability of medical products at all times, while also enhancing the resilience of supply chains and accelerating responses to changes in demand and health crises.
Saeed bin Mubarak Al Hajeri, Minister of State and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Drug Authority, affirmed that this mechanism is part of the approach to developing the national pharmaceutical system by diversifying supply chains.
