The UAE Supports Humanitarian Efforts in Sudan with $20 Million
The UAE continues its role in supporting humanitarian response efforts in Sudan, through the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Emirates International Aid Agency and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). Under this agreement, the UAE will provide a grant of $20 million to accelerate the emergency response in Sudan.
This grant will provide food assistance to populations affected by the conflict and address the urgent food security needs of the most vulnerable groups, including internally displaced persons in host communities.
In the presence of Tariq Al Ameri, Chairman of the Emirates International Aid Agency, the agreement was signed by Rashid Salem Al Shamsi, Executive Director of Logistics Support at the Emirates International Aid Agency, and Bashar Al Hammami, Director of the Partnerships Office in the UAE, representing the United Nations World Food Programme.
Al Ameri emphasized the UAE's continued leading global role in providing urgent humanitarian assistance to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the catastrophic crisis in Sudan, and to meet the essential food needs of displaced people within Sudan and in Chad, South Sudan, Uganda, and Ethiopia, which host communities.
He noted the "shared international and moral responsibility to address the challenges in famine-affected and high-risk areas, which underscores the importance of providing life-saving humanitarian aid in such tragic crises and critical circumstances."
Al Hamami stated that the UN World Food Programme "expresses its deepest gratitude to the UAE government for its generous contribution of $20 million, which will support the Programme's life-saving operations in Sudan. This significant contribution will enable us to reach millions of people facing acute hunger and suffering daily, and will provide life-saving support with a tangible and real impact on the lives of the most vulnerable families."
The UAE provided $4.24 billion to Sudan over the past decade (2015-2025), and has allocated $784 million in humanitarian aid since the outbreak of war in 2023.
The UAE also emphasizes the importance of collective action with regional and international partners, and the necessity of establishing a humanitarian truce that guarantees the protection of civilians and facilitates the opening of safe corridors for the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need, thus ensuring stability and peace for the brotherly Sudanese people.
