OpenAI to Help UAE Develop One of the World's Largest Data Centers
Artificial intelligence company OpenAI plans to help develop a new massive data center in the UAE, which could eventually become one of the largest in the world.
The company, the developer of the popular ChatGPT chatbot, is expected to be a major tenant in a recently announced 5-gigawatt artificial intelligence complex in Abu Dhabi, according to a Bloomberg report, citing people familiar with the matter. The sources said OpenAI's participation has not yet been finalized, but a formal announcement could come soon, according to the agency's report.
Once completed, the massive facility will cover 10 square miles and consume roughly the energy of five nuclear reactors, significantly larger than any facility announced so far by OpenAI or its closest competitors. One of the sources said the 5 gigawatts will not all go to OpenAI, but will be distributed among several companies.
The UAE and the United States announced that G42, an Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence company with previous ties to China, will build a 5-gigawatt data center in partnership with several unnamed US companies.
The announcement coincided with US President Donald Trump's visit to the UAE as part of his Middle East dealmaking tour. Officials were still negotiating potential AI deals for the UAE during the president's visit.
One source said MGX, an Abu Dhabi-based investment firm, is also considering participating in the data center project alongside OpenAI and G42, adding that other US partners may also be involved.
Stargate
Two sources said the planned AI campus in the UAE is part of OpenAI's Stargate initiative to support the development of artificial intelligence.
OpenAI, SoftBank Group, and Oracle announced Project Stargate with President Trump last January, stating that the joint venture would invest up to $500 billion in US projects over the next four years.
Earlier this month, OpenAI announced its intention to partner with international governments to develop more AI data centers outside the United States and strengthen American leadership in this field.
Through the UAE project, OpenAI will effectively help the Middle East achieve rapid progress in providing the necessary infrastructure for AI services, achieving an ambitious goal the company had originally set for the United States.
Late last year, OpenAI presented the Biden administration with the need for data centers with capacity up to 5 gigawatts, an unprecedented goal that raised questions about how such facilities would be operated. Now, the company is participating in a similar project abroad ahead of launching a similar project in the United States.
