UAE supports the export of clean electricity from Albania to Italy.. Cooperation between 3 companies
The UAE continues its international presence supporting the expansion of clean electricity projects in support of the goals approved by the COP28 Climate Summit to triple renewable energy capacity by 2030.
In this context, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company "Masdar", "TAQA Transmission Grids", a subsidiary of the "TAQA" Group, and the Italian company "Eni", signed a framework agreement to move forward with the implementation of the strategic tripartite partnership recently signed by the UAE, Italy and Albania to cooperate in clean energy projects.
The agreement was signed by the Group CEO and Managing Director of "TAQA" Jasim Husain Thabet, the CEO of "Masdar" Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, and the CEO of "Eni" Claudio Descalzi, in the presence of the UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, and the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni.
The three companies will work together to advance the implementation of the tripartite partnership initiative, with a focus on establishing a cooperation framework through which a long-term agreement will be signed for Italy to purchase renewable energy produced in Albania and transported to Italy.
Project details
To implement the renewable energy transmission project, Masdar and TAQA Transmission Grids from the UAE and Albanian energy company KES have been selected, while Eni has been selected as a preferred potential buyer.
The tripartite framework agreement, signed during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2025, outlines key areas of cooperation between the UAE, Albania and Italy, including renewable energy and energy infrastructure, with the aim of enhancing energy security, supporting sustainable development and accelerating efforts to transform the energy sector in the Mediterranean region.
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Chairman of Masdar, said: “The agreement embodies the visions and directions of the three countries to enhance international cooperation in the field of renewable energy, in line with the vision and directives of the leadership to work on enhancing energy security and providing its supplies as a basic enabler to support sustainable economic and social development.”
He explained that by benefiting from the UAE’s expertise and leadership in clean energy technologies, and Italy’s advanced energy infrastructure, “we will be able to find new paths to achieve progress and provide practical solutions that contribute to tripling global renewable energy production, in line with the goals of the historic “UAE Agreement.”
He added: “We are confident that the initiative will contribute to providing energy at an appropriate cost, and accelerating sustainable development, by providing job opportunities and driving economic and social progress.”
Sustainable Energy Solutions
For his part, Jasim Hussain Thabet said: “The agreement highlights the importance of strategic cooperation in promoting sustainable energy solutions,” adding: “We at TAQA believe that strong infrastructure forms the backbone of a successful transition to clean energy.”
He explained that by harnessing the extensive expertise in the field of electricity transmission networks, "we ensure the ability to integrate electricity generated from renewable energy sources into the transmission network efficiently and reliably for cross-border transmission."
He stressed that the cooperation with both Masdar and Eni not only helps facilitate the export of renewable energy from Albania, but also reinforces TAQA's commitment to becoming a world-leading utility company in low-carbon energy and water technologies.
He stressed that through this cooperation, "we are making real progress on the ground that contributes to enhancing energy security and achieving sustainability in the Mediterranean region." While Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said: "The agreement is an extension of our important partnerships in the Mediterranean region, and will strengthen Masdar's presence and activities in this region."
He added that by leveraging TAQA's expertise in high-voltage transmission infrastructure, and Eni's leadership in the European energy market, the important partnership will contribute to the development of large-scale, qualitative projects. He explained that Masdar, as a reliable partner in the European energy transition, is committed to supporting sustainable development and providing clean, reliable and affordable energy to communities.
Cross-border energy projects
For his part, Claudio Descalzi said: “Cooperation in developing cross-border energy projects plays an important role in achieving energy security, as these projects contribute to enhancing the use of more sustainable energy carriers.”
He added: “Through this agreement, the distinguished expertise of the developing companies will be combined with their leadership in the sector, and thanks to the strong relationships that bring us together with our partners in the UAE and Albania, we can find new paths that contribute to driving efforts to achieve a qualitative shift in the energy sector, and support the efforts to develop the energy market in the Mediterranean region.”
Masdar has significantly increased the total capacity of its project portfolio over the past two years, by 150%, from 20 GW in 2022 to 51 GW by the end of 2024. This includes Masdar’s acquisition last year of a majority stake in Terna Energy, Greece’s largest renewable energy developer and investor, strengthening its position in Southwest Europe. Masdar aims to increase the total capacity of its project portfolio to 100 GW by 2030.
