Immigrant son of a "shelter" brings joy to Newcastl
There are 50,000 Eritreans in Sweden who have immigrated to the Scandinavian country since the last century due to the difficult circumstances in their homeland. The most prominent of these is Alexander Isak, who ended Newcastle United's long trophy drought on Sunday by scoring the winning goal against Liverpool in the League Cup final.
The Eritreans head to the Solna suburb north of Stockholm, where Alexander was born on September 21, 1999, the same day the Chi-Chi earthquake struck in Taiwan, killing 2,400 people.
At the age of 11, Isak joined the famous AIK academy, which was once a "shelter" to protect people from nuclear bombs and their effects. Peter Wenberg, who was in charge at the time, says, "His gaze wasn't that of an ordinary child. He knew what he wanted. Once, he noticed the opposing goalkeeper was a little further ahead and decided to shoot hard. We couldn't believe his courage and ability. We were amazed at what he did."
He continued, "At the age of 16, he exploded physically. He grew extremely tall and started playing with the seniors. A year later, he moved to Dortmund." In Germany, things didn't go as well for the Eritrean boy as they should have. He played for the reserve team, but his appearances with the first team were sporadic. He then moved to Real Sociedad after a loan spell with Dutch side Willem II.
In Basque Country, Isak exploded beyond even the most optimistic expectations, scoring 44 goals in 132 appearances for the Blue and Whites. Scoring a goal in every game became a common occurrence, and he even bid farewell to the club with a goal against Barcelona before signing for Newcastle in a record £63 million deal.
In his first match for the new team, he scored in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, earning the Man of the Match award. He continued his scoring habit, and last December he became the first Swede to score a Premier League hat-trick since Freddie Ljungberg in May 2003. On Sunday, the immigrant boy, who learned football in a shelter, was on target when he scored against Liverpool, giving Newcastle their first title in 55 years.
