Not science fiction... Europe begins operating its first unmanned flying car

Europe has begun testing its first-ever unmanned flying car, the EHang EH216-S, in a move that could redefine everyday urban air transportation, both personal and public, for the global community.

EHang, a Chinese brand, introduced the EHang EH216-S, a two -seater flying car designed for mobility in advanced urban environments. This flying car does not require a human pilot to operate. With its recent flight in Benidorm, Spain, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) marked the first operation of an unmanned vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in a European city.

Near Benidorm, the aircraft flew over a designated runway with 12 drones. As part of the demonstration, it performed surveillance and charging tasks as part of the integrated U-ELCOME project. The U-ELCOME project itself provides a platform for partners from 51 collaborating entities in Spain, France, and Italy to test their UAM technology.

The goal is to certify and integrate the European U-space service, a development service being conducted for the first time, and subsequently authorize the use of drones in urban areas, according to ZAG magazine. Using U-space allows the Spanish air navigation service provider to manage this important process to ensure smooth, fair, and productive operations without disrupting air traffic.
