Opposition, candidates challenge fairness of Somalia's elections

Somalia's Union of Candidates shared the Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble that they’re deeply concerned about the lack of transparency in the country’s upcoming elections and how unhappy they are with the current process.

The main presidential candidates met the Prime Minister just hours after rejecting the ongoing parliamentary elections in the country, which they have called “opaque and chaotic”.

The meeting comes at a time when the opposition and Lower House candidates said the elections were rigged, and feared the country may slip back to violence.

Roble shared a report with opposition candidates on his efforts to hold free and fair elections in the country. He pledged to hold accountable anyone who violates electoral integrity, amid mounting abuses of power and violations of electoral agreements.

According to the office of the Prime Minister, two key points were agreed upon, namely, to make changes to the process that started the elections of the House of the People, and convene a meeting of the National Consultative Assembly and to have the electoral commissions to carry out their duties in accordance with the agreed electoral procedures.

Before the lower house elections kicked off, the opposition team accused incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of organizing the elections to gain a clear advantage in the presidential elections. They claimed that the main security chiefs had been portrayed in various election committees.

Outgoing President Farmajo has been accused of stoking the fire by excluding members of the opposition as he laid down the roadmap for election.
