Monitoring their social media comments: Trump administration revokes visas of 6 foreigners

In a move that raised many questions, the administration of US President Donald Trump revoked the visas of six foreigners after they "made sarcastic or belittling comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last month."

The US State Department announced on its Twitter account Tuesday night that it had decided to revoke their visas after reviewing their social media posts and videos about Kirk, who was killed while delivering a speech on a college campus in Utah on September 10.

She added, "Foreigners who exploit American hospitality and celebrate the assassination of American citizens will be deported." She also published excerpts of their comments on social media, which raised questions from human rights activists about the legality of these measures and whether they conflict with the principle of freedom of expression.

However, the State Department did not specify the names of those whose visas were suspended, stating only that they were from Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, Paraguay, and South Africa.

This announcement came as Trump posthumously awarded Kirk the highest American civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Last month, some Trump administration officials fired or took other disciplinary action against journalists, teachers, and others for criticizing Kirk and his positions, raising concerns about freedom of expression.
