How did Los Angeles become a "hotbed of anger"?
CNN spoke about why Los Angeles has become a "hotbed of anger" over immigration policy. The source said that the demographics of Los Angeles played a role in igniting protests against the immigration policy adopted by the Trump administration.
Los Angeles is home to a large Hispanic and Latino population, comprising nearly half of the population. CNN also noted that Los Angeles is the most populous county in California, with a population of nearly 10 million. CNN reported that 48.6 percent of these people are Hispanic or Latino. More than a third of Los Angeles' residents are immigrants.
It highlighted that Los Angeles officially became a "sanctuary city" last November, before Donald Trump took office for a second term. A "sanctuary city" refers to a city that provides refuge to certain individuals or groups, especially if these cities are considered more hospitable to immigrants, refugees, or others facing challenges elsewhere.
The Department of Homeland Security said its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division arrested 2,000 immigration offenders daily in the past few days, significantly higher than the daily average of 311 in fiscal year 2024 under former President Joe Biden.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Monday that ICE's sweep of downtown undocumented immigrants, which began Friday, "ignited the violent protests" over the weekend.
